Admissions Policy

A. CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO THE HAMLET SCHOOL

1. Abilities:
1.1  The District Office must approve the admission of all learners.
       Learners must be physically and intellectually capable of benefiting from the school program. Exceptions will be made on merit in        deliberation with the District Officer as well as the Director.
1.2  Prospective learners not toilet trained will not be considered for admission.

1.3  Blind, deaf and severely physically handicapped learners will not be admitted, as the school does not possess the necessary physical        facilities and appropriate specialized educators.

       Admission of partially blind or deaf learners will be considered on merit.
2. Age:

2.1  New admissions must be under 16 years or younger, unless the learners is a direct transfer from a special or other school.

2.2  The age range for compulsory school attendance is between 6 - 18 years.
2.3  The District Office must allocate and LSEN number to all learners over the age of 7 years.
3. Evaluation and admission:

       All learners will be admitted on a six months probation period, thereafter a final decision will be taken.
4. Admission, discharge, amendment of policy:

       Should a learner's behaviour, or state of health, be detrimental to other learners, school attendance could be temporarily or        permanently suspended.

B. CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION

1. Admission:
       Learners residing outside the feeding area will only be admitted provided there are sufficient vacancies in the school.
2. School Fees:

       School fees are payable in advance.
3. Transport:

3.1  Parents/Guardians are responsible for transport to and from school.

3.2  Learners making use of school transport must reside in the feeder area, or be on an existing bus route.

3.3  Parents must inform bus drivers in advance when children need not be picked up or dropped off.

3.4  Any change, temporary or permanent, in the drop-off or pick-ip points must be clarified with the office.

3.5  Bus fees must be promptly paid monthly.
4. School meals:
       A light lunch, as prescribed in the training program, will be served.

       Exceptions will be made solely on cultural or religious grounds.

5. Health regulations:

       Health regulations concerning contagious disease, lice, etc. must be strictly adhered to. Parents are fully responsible for all aspects        concerning medical care of their children. This includes supplying the school with the necessary medication, visits to the doctor or        dentist.
       The principal may request a medical examination for a medical or mental disorder.
       The school nurse will attend to medication during school hours.

6. School attendance:

       Parents/Guardians are responsible for regular school attendance. Absence must be reported personally, telephonically or in writing.

7. School uniform:

       All learners must attend school in the prescribed uniform.

8. School rules:

       All school rules must be adhered to.

The final decision regarding a learner's admission to, or discharge from, or an amendment to the policy of The Hamlet School, rests with the School Governing Body.

Any issue or matter relating to the school not covered in this Admissions Policy will be in accordance with the relevant legislation.
